The Smokin Sam Story
A passionate blues vocalist and harp player from Melbourne, Smokin Sam loves to express his ideas and experiences in life by composing songs with fun or meaningful lyrics, which he combines skilfully with his soulful harp playing and singing or on guitar or keyboards.
His early musical influences included Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendricks, Johnny Winter, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and early Fleetwood Mac. He moulded his blues harp playing style along the greats of Peps Persson, Junior Wells, Sonny Boy Williamson, Little Walter and Australia's own Broderick Smith.
Listening to other music genres, Smokin Sam also become heavily influenced by bands such as King Crimson, Yes, Pink Floyd, Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart and he started writing material influenced by these bands.
Sam's musical career began at the age of 16, when he began singing and playing cover songs from The Rolling Stones with his first band, 'South City Union'.
Later he was invited to join the band 'Fat Alroy' and during that time was introduced to the music of 'Taste' fronted by Rory Gallagher.
Sam's career as a musician was now established, and as he mixed his reportare of old blues songs from his idols with his new music influences, he began to expand his musical taste by listening to bands like King Crimson, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Yes, Pink Floyd, Genesis. As his music tastes evolved and changed, Sam formed his next band, 'Clutch Cargo' and he played the underground scene for a few years, playing all original songs.
Once Clutch Cargo was disbanded, he took a long break from the music scene. In 2005 Sam re-joined the blues music scene after attending an MBAS jam night. He joined up and started participating in the jam nights and other events. Through this, he met some wonderful people and with plenty of encouragement he formed his current blues bands, Synergy Blue and soon after expanded out to do freelance work under the name of 'Smokin Sam'", as well as 'Smokin Sam' & Cargo Blues Band.

"The British ballads became a new kind of form in their hand. And out of them came the blues, a new kind of song of commentary and satire, a song form which, after all, has become the main musical form of the whole human species."
